Hardware needed to create a mining rig and mine cryptocurrencies - Part 1

Introduction

This article is the first from series of 3 articles that will help you set up and configure your own rig to mine crypto-currencies (ethereum, monero, zcash, ...) and therefore earn money. I had a lot of thought before I started this work and I had to create my own mining rig before explaining what to do.

The mining rig will allow you to use several graphics cards dedicated to mining and connected to a motherboard. You will have much more computing power (hashrate) for mining crypto-currencies .

After successfully installing and configuring mining rig , I'm ready to provide you with specific information on how to mount it. Although these articles will address more to an audience of experienced computer scientists I will strive to make the knowledge (so much of the technical details as possible) as simple as possible so that as much as you can get there.

Here is a picture of mining rig that currently allows to mine the ethereum

These items will allow anyone who wants to get serious about mining to get a wealth of valuable information, so you do not have to worry about bad investments and therefore know where you're going.

Again, if you find this article far too technical, do not hesitate to turn to the faucet to start smoothly or the cloud mining to mine crypto-currencies without hardware. You can also download my free ebook, (after subscribing to the newsletter) which is addressed to anyone who knows how to use a web browser and who will explain how to earn money through crypto-currencies without necessarily investing.

First, I'll give you the list of equipment you'll need and the usefulness of each item. In fact, mounting a rig requires a certain number of elements that may be necessary or incidental.

This will allow you to define the budget that you will be ready to set on achieving your mining rig and calculate your profitability accurately before you start. It will also take into account the course of the cryptocurrency (ethereum, monero, zcash, ...) that you will mine and do not forget it fluctuates with time.

Hardware you will need to create a mining rig and mine cryptocurrencies

Motherboard (necessary) : This component is the main part of your mining rig because it will be installed on all the components needed mining cryptocurrencies . The key is to identify the number of graphics cards that will match with the motherboard. Because of the number of graphics cards will give the power that you will be able to generate and which will be necessary to the mining.

The more graphics you have (all will depend on the model as well) and the more you can mining crypto-currencies . The goal will be to find or buy a motherboard at a cheap price with a maximum of PCI port.

As a reminder, a PCI port is a connection slot that will be plugged into a graphics card so that it is recognized by the motherboard.

Here are the models of motherboards that I advise you:

6 PCI express portsSocket 1366DDR3
MSI Z170A Sli Plus MotherboardIntel ATX Socket LGA 1151

Power switch (accessory) : This item will allow you to power the motherboard in a convenient way. Indeed considering the motherboard will be in the open air and we will not use a case you will not be able to use the power button of the latter. It is nevertheless possible to use a screwdriver to short circuit the two pins that correspond to the power of the motherboard.

But if you find it painful the best is to plug a push button on the two power pins in order to power on the motherboard with more simplicity and security.

Memory module (necessary) : The memory module is a component that will be necessary for the proper functioning and stability of the operating system (Windows or Linux) that you will use to carry out your mining. The amount of memory you will have with your barrettes will not affect the performance of the mining.

For the operating system to work in good conditions I would therefore recommend 4 GB of RAM, which is the recommended minimum in DDR 3 or DDR 4 (recommended model for motherboards recommended in this guide).

CPU (needed) : The processor is a negligible hardware element for mining. Although it is possible to mine with, graphics cards will be more appropriate in terms of performance and value for money. For your mining rig an entry-level processor will therefore do much business and therefore will not have a significant weight in your budget.

Operating System (Needed) : It's the link between the software and hardware in your mining rig , so you'll need it if you want to start a mining program and mine cryptocurrencies. To avoid headaches I advise you to use Windows and for those who do not have trouble with the command line you can use a Linux distribution such as Ubuntu for example. However, I will show you a Linux distribution specifically dedicated to mining 😉 if you still have no problem typing command lines.

Thermal paste (essential) : You will need thermal paste when laying the processor on the motherboard. Indeed the main utility of this type of product is to optimize the dissipation of the heat generated by the processor during intensive operation. In addition you will also need it for the maintenance of your graphics cards if they start to heat up abnormally with the time spent to mine with.

Although a new graphics card already has thermal paste spread on its chips (GPU) it will tend to be used and dried after a very long use. It will therefore be necessary to renew the thermal paste so that your graphics cards find a second wind.

Graphics card (GPU) (needed) : Here is the essential element and will be the most to study before mounting a rig. The graphics card will depend on your performance, so it will have a significant weight in the budget that you set.

Indeed this is the graphics card that will allow you to solve the cryptographic problems related to the creation of new quantities of cryptocurrencies. You will also learn that a good graphics card is not necessarily the most expensive and that you need to know which ones have the best price / quality ratio.

In terms of mining we evaluate the efficiency of a graphics card by its hashrate (a measure that expresses the speed with which the graphics card performs a calculation and returns a result) and thus the more the hashrate will be higher and more large amounts of crypto-currencies newly generated on the network.

Below you will find the best models of graphics cards that will allow you to mine crypto-currencies optimally:

BuyNameDescriptionHashrateAverage Consumption (expressed in watts)
AMD Rx Vega 64 8 Go de Ram
The new AMD model graphics card model.

It replaces the 1080 Gtx model and provides similar characteristics in terms of mining.
Ethereum : 30-40 MH/S240 watt
Graphic card Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 G1 Gaming 8G
One of the best of Russia graphics cards to mine as Aleksei Stakhanov, the minor hero of the USSR.

This graphics card produced by Nvidia will allow you to mine a hashrate between 30 and 40 MH / S.

If you want to produce blocks on a blockchain like a real stakhanovist is the graphics card you need it however it makes its price (about 500 €) more it is rather voracious in electricity (about 240 Watt on average for the mining). Ethereum: 30-40 MH / S
Ethereum : 30-40 MH/S
Graphic card AMD Rx 580
It replaces the RX 480 and it offers a higher hashrate.
Ethereum : about 20 MH/S ( without overclocking )185 Watt
Graphic card AMD R9 390
This Graphic card is very powerfull allow you to get to obtain very good yields especially for the mining of monero.

In fact, it offers a more consistent hashrate than the graphic cards presented below.

If you have the means in terms of budget, this graphics card will satisfy you.
Ethereum: About 30 MH / S 275 Watt
Graphic card AMD Rx 480
For those who can afford the Radeon rx 480 with 8GB Ram is the Graphic card of the moment to mine ethereum, monero or even Zcash.

The rate of hashrate is impressive for the price more you can indulge in the latest video games of the moment when you are not mining. 😉

For those who wants to save less money do not hesitate to take the model of 4 GB which offers a rate of hashrate a bit lower but which will cost you almost 100 euros less.

More comfortable it's the best.
Ethereum: About 20 MH / S (without overclocking)

150 Watt
Graphic card AMD Rx 480
The 4 GB RAM model of this graphic card is similar in every respect to the model shown above.

It's just the price that changes so only 200€ you will have in your hands the most profitable graphics card on the market with best price / quality ratio to mine the ethereum, the monero or even zcash.
Ethereum: About 20 MH / S (without overclocking)

Monero: Approximately 580 H / S (without overclocking)
150 Watt
Graphic card Nvidia GTX 1060
This graphic card produced by NVIDIA offers similar performance to the AMD Rx 480 and 580 models.

It consumes much less electricity while remaining profitable.
Ethereum: About 20 MH / S (without overclocking)
Graphic card AMD Rx 570
This graphic card will be ideal for mining its characteristics and its performances are very similar to the model rx480.

However the hashrate will be less but not much what makes it a graphics card effective enough for mining. But if you can add some money I would recommend the model rx480 with 4 GB of Ram to be more profitable.
Ethereum: About 20 MH / S (without overclocking) 115 Watt
Graphic card AMD Rx 560
A model of Radeon for small budgets that will allow you to undermine the most profitable cryptocurrencies of the market for a hundred euros only.
Ethereum: about 10 MH/S (without overclocking)90 Watt
Graphic card Nvidia GTX 750 Ti
Here is the graphic card for those who want to put as little money as possible and actually for a hundred euros you will have a graphic card sufficiently competent for mining.

The performance in hashrate will not be as good as the radeon models presented above but if your budget is limited this graphics card will be ideal for you to start cryptocurrency mining at lower cost.

Important Note: This graphics card has only 2 GB video memory, it will not allow you to mine the ethereum. It will nevertheless remain interesting to mine monero at a lower cost.
Mono: about 240 H / S 30 Watt

USB stick or SSD drive (required) : Corresponds to your storage space and will be installed on the operating system to start the mining session. A USB 3.0 stick or SSD drive (with a minimum of 8GB of storage space for OS installation) should be provided to ensure a fast and comfortable start.

Moreover, it is better to avoid the so-called conventional (mechanical) hard drives which are slower (read / write data) and tend to lose performance easily over time and are therefore less reliable.

RJ-45 Ethernet cable (required) : this item will be required to connect your rig to your box or router to connect your rig to a mining pool and mine crypto-currencies via your Internet connection.

WiFi signal Repeater (accessory) :   If you want to install your rig in a room far from your Internet access box, you will definitely need a WiFi Repeater to improve the intensity and quality of the signal. You can then connect your rig to the Repeater in order to have an optimal Internet connection.

If you want to save money you can also buy a straight RJ45 cable long enough to connect your rig to your Internet access box.

Keyboard and mouse (needed) : to capture the launch commands and conveniently interact with the graphical interface of your rig's operating system, these elements seem to me necessary

Riser PCI Express (essential) : In addition to be essential, the riser will be especially practical to connect several graphics cards on a motherboard. Indeed the PCI express ports (which will be connected graphics cards) are very close to each other which poses a big problem of space to accommodate several graphics cards (not to mention the heat concentration).

The riser, which is a removable PCI Express port, will allow you to connect the graphics cards, to arrange them in an orderly way and well spaced from each other on any support.

Power supply (essential) : Without this element, there is no electricity to power the motherboard but also graphics cards that will allow you to mine crypto-currencies. Since graphics cards are the elements that will be the most energy-hungry, it will be necessary to provide a sufficiently powerful power supply. In order to properly choose your power supply, please take note of the power consumption (expressed in Watts) of your graphics cards.

PCI Express and Sata Cables (Required) : You will need PCI express cables to connect your graphics cards to the power supply so you can power them. The Sata cable meanwhile will connect the riser to the motherboard and thus detect the graphics card. Normally these cables are supplied with your power supply but if there is not enough for all your graphics cards you will have to get some.

Stand-up fan or air conditioner (mobile and fixed) : You will quickly learn that during a mining session and given the huge demand for graphics cards, they will emit a lot of heat. And inevitably you will need a fan to avoid a concentration of heat in the room where you will mine. After that for those who have more budget, an air conditioner will be honest the ideal to further refresh the space dedicated to mining and significantly improve the life of its graphics cards.

A good air conditioner will also purify the air and reduce the amount of airborne dust that may accumulate in the graphics cards.

Below, I recommend the following standing fans as well as mobile or fixed air-conditioners with economical consumption (class A and A ++)

Surge arrestor and lightning arrestor (according to me needed) or inverter: for me it is an necessary element to the safety of your mining rig because if there is ever a thunderstorm or a surge problem these special outlets will protect the latter which I recall is an investment that costs money.

Indeed, if a flood of electricity occurs, these plugs are designed to absorb everything and prevent irreversible degradation of your equipment.

So protect your investment and think about getting this kind of catch to avoid the disappointments. Moreover, the manufacturers of these outlets offer assurances that allow you to benefit from a reimbursement of your equipment (up to 15000 euros for the Eaton's outlets) in case of loss and in addition if the promise of protection is not required.

Wattmeter (accessory but necessary to accurately calculate the profitability of its mining rig)
Like a good investor you will need to know if your investment is profitable. As a result, a wattmeter will be necessary and convenient to increase the amount of electricity your mining rig consumes during your mining sessions. You can therefore know the electricity cost of your mining rig (using the electricity cost scale provided by your supplier) and whether it is profitable, it will also depend on the price of the crypto-currency you will be undermining .

Indeed if a crypto-currency costs you more electricity than it pays you it will be better to drop and undermine another cryptocurrency more profitable to undermine. Remember to check this page to learn about the most profitable cryptocurrencies to undermine..

Android smartphone (accessory) : While the Android smartphone is an accessory, but if you're not a genre, whether it's a phone or a phone interesting type of phone. Well, just because the Android market has many applications that can be useful when you mine. To have your applications monitored rigging (which we find in the following articles) remotely and you learn about the performance of the latter if you are on the go.

Or even applications to consult the euro course of the different cryptocurrencies manage your cryptocurrencies portfolio currently in your possession.

In addition it is also possible to Earn fractions of cryptocurrencies (if you're motivated) via the applications (to tap ) again available on the Android Market, not necessarily on the application and even virtually nonexistent on the market of windows phone.

So if you plan to get into mining and you have to change your phone better an Android smartphone

Here is a selection of Android smartphones that are very affordable in terms of technology and sufficient technical performance to allow you to continue your cryptocurrencies cryptocurrencies business.

Asus Zenfone Go Smartphone portable débloqué 4G (Scrren: 5 inches - 16 Go - Double Micro-SIM - Android 6.0 Marshmallow), Noir

Ledger (accessory) : This is really the ideal tool if you keep your crypto-currencies closer to you. Indeed, the portfolio is like a portfolio that can allow you to store most crypto-currencies known. Although this device is accessory, I think on the quieter mind to have its crypto-currencies at hand.

So if you have a point of honor about securing your crypto-currencies, don't hesitate to get one .

Support to install your mining rig (recommended) : When assembling your mining rig, it is advisable to have the motherboard and graphics cards on a shelf or a special stand so you can avoid laying them directly on the ground. Beyond the aesthetic aspect, the goal is to install its rigging system in an orderly and secure way in order to optimize the space used in a room and to mine comfortably.

There are special media dedicated to mining that are equipped with additional fans and offers specific locations for the installation of graphics cards. However if your budget is limited it is also possible to get a shelf and install your mining rig.

Here is a list of the supports that I advise you to install your mining rig :
