Assembling, configuring and starting the mining rig - Part 2

Before you start this tutorial make sure you have read the buying guide and have all the necessary equipment to assemble the mining rig.

Once again if you are not comfortable in computer science and you have never ridden a PC of your life, you will allow you to start more easily in the world of crypto-currencies.

Also know that if you want to get crypto-currencies without taking the lead with technical considerations it is possible to buy mining contracts in the cloud or to buy directly from the crypto-currency as bitcoin or ethereum with your credit card.

For the others start assembling our mining rig, let's go!

Mounting the mining rig step by step

1/Set up the CPU

Take charge of your CPU (fingertips) and take care not to touch the transistors during handling. Locate the processor-only slot on the motherboard and gently place the processor on its slot without forcing.

To properly set up the cpu you will have to take as a cue the triangle which indicates in which direction to put the latter on its location.

Now that the processor has been well installed we will move to the application of thermal paste.

2/Put thermal paste

Once the processor has been installed we will now apply the thermal paste which will keep this one at a good temperature and prevent it from overheating.

Take your tube of thermal paste and apply a drop on the surface, using a spatula or an old credit card to spread it correctly on the surface of the processor. You will have to spread in order to obtain a thin layer barely translucent.

If you ever put too much dough the processor will heat up so just a drop to spread cleanly so that the latter does not heat up. In case you wish to restart the manipulation (if you ever put too much dough or want to put on the new thermal paste) you must first clean with a thermal paste cleaning kit and retry the operation.

3/Setup CPU fan

In addition to the thermal paste you must install the ventilator (Fan + Heatsink) which of course will dissipate the heat released by the processor during its operation and cool the latter.

To do so you will first need to install the heatsink (supplied with the fan) over the processor.

Then place the fan on the heatsink and secure it with the screws provided.

Finally, connect the fan power connector to the 4 pin socket on the motherboard and labeled CPU_FAN.

4/Connect the processor to the power supply

To be taken in hand the 4 pin cable normally integrated in the power supply and connect it to the ATX Socket (4 pins) of the motherboard and normally located near the processor location.

5/Install the memory modules

Simply take your Rams and connect them to the connection ports dedicated to the installation of the RAM memory modules.

Make sure your power strips are compatible with your motherboard (check RAM, DDR3 or DDR4 technology?) and put each of your bars on the same color slots.

6/Connect the graphics cards to the power supply

Take control of the PCI power cable and plug it into your graphics card.

With the cable shown below you can connect it to two graphics cards.

This PCI express power cable will allow you to connect your graphics card to the power supply

Then connect the cable to the power supply (rear) by plugging it into one of the PCI Express jacks as shown in the picture below:

For example on this power supply of the Corsair brand it is necessary to connect the PCi express cable in the Socket 6 + 2 PCI-E (surrounded in red) for the graphics cards to be fed when starting the mining rig

Now that your graphics cards are plugged into the PSU we will now connect them to the PCI risers for data transfer to the motherboard.

7/connect the graphics cards to the PCI riser and connect them to the PCI Express ports of the motherboard

In order for the data produced by the graphics cards to be transmitted to the motherboard, you must connect them to the PCI Express ports.

You will need to connect each graphics card to a PCI Express riser when assembling your mining rig

However and as I was able to explain in the previous article it is not possible to install all your graphics cards directly on the motherboard. Indeed not only is there not enough space but the heat that would emerge from such a provision would be problematic.

You will need to use the risers in order to arrange your graphics cards on a suitable medium and space them enough so that the fresh air circulates between them. However, it is recommended (as explained once again in the previous article ) to install an air conditioner or a fan, to prevent a high concentration of heat around the graphics cards during the of crypto-currencies.

To return to the connections of your graphics cards to the risers, simply connect each graphics card to each riser, then connect each riser to a multi-SATA power cable that itself will be connected to the power supply (6 pin socket).

Each riser must be connected to a PCI Express port available on the motherboard, for example with the motherboard shown in photo we can install up to 5 graphics cards to mine crypto-currencies

You will also need to connect each of the risers to a PCI Express port available on the motherboard with a USB cable provided with each riser.

8 Connect the SSD to the operating system installation

To get done you just need to take your SSD and plug it into the motherboard using a SATA cable for data transfer. Also connect the drive to a SATA power cable and connect it to your PSU.

9/preparing the bootable key required to install the Windows operating system

To install the Windows operating system you'll need to prepare a bootable key that will contain the latter's ISO file.

You have two choices for this:

  • Either prepare your bootable key with the Rufus software by making sure you have a Windows ISO image (version 7 at least version 64 bits)
  • Use Microsoft's Mediacreationtool software for creating bootable key to install a new copy of Windows (7, 8.1 or 10 64 bit version)
  • Here are the 2 feed pins (circled in red) that will need to be short-circuited in order to start the mining rig if you do not have a push button

To do so you can either use a screwdriver to short-circuit the 2 power pins on the motherboard or use a push button for simplicity.

    11/installing the Windows operating system

I believe that at this point you are able to install an operating system such as Windows on an SSD, so I would not detail this step.

However if you are experiencing difficulties in doing so I advise you this tutorial very well explained.

12/install the latest known drivers of the graphics cards of its mining rig

In order to fully exploit your Graphic cards lors du minage je vous conseille de télécharger les derniers pilotes connus en fonction de la marque de graphics card que vous possédez.

Here is the link to download the latest drivers of your NVIDIA graphic cards.

Here is also the link to download the latest drivers of your AMD graphic cards.

Create an Ethereum wallet to get paid

Before you begin to mine you will have to create an Ethereum address in order to receive the Ethereum that you will have mined once the payment threshold reached on the mining pool (in this case 0.2 ETH on NanoPool).

To be done and not to waste time I advise you the wallet Myetherwallet which for my part is a simple and efficient wallet to store its ethereum.

In order to obtain an Ethereum address exploitable, for this nothing simpler you simply click on "new wallet" to the left of the main menu.

Then enter a sufficiently complex password that preferably contains lowercase letters, capitals, numbers, and special characters.

You will then be asked to download the private key generated from your password and that will allow you to connect to your Ethereum wallet.

Once the download is done click on "I understand" and a new page will open with the display of your private key.

To connect to your new wallet you just need to click on "Software" in the menu, choose the first "Keystore file" and pick up the private key generated and store on your computer. Enter your private key and finish by clicking on "Access Wallet".

You will then have access to your balance and all transactions made through your portfolio (click on ETH (https://etherscan.io) to view the transaction history)

By logging in using your private key you will have access to your ethereum account to read your current balance and all transactions made

Now that you have your Ethereum wallet we will now be able to switch to ethereum mining and start earning money.

Definition and presentation of the nanopool mining pool

The mining pool is a miner's network that puts their computational power to work to mine cryptocurrencies more efficiently and thus obtain much better yields than solo mining.

The other advantage is that the large amount of computational power generated by a mining pool allows to almost stabilize and slow down the difficulty curve of the mining. In fact, more than one crypto-currency is mined over time and its difficulty curve to mine it grows, sometimes in an almost exponential way.

To start in mining we will choose the nanopool mining pool of course there are many other mining pools.

However I would dwell on the choice of this mining pool because it is the first with which I started more it is possible to mine several other interesting crypto-currencies on this pool that are:

    • Ethereum
    • Ethereum classic
    • Pascal
    • Monero
    • Siacoin
    • Zcash

Thereafter and once you have figured out how to make free mining to you to mine the crypto-currency of your choice on this pool.

Here is a list of the different cryptocurrencies that you can mine on the NanoPool mining pool

You just have to think about as regularly as possible about the most profitable cryptocurrencies and thus define your mining strategy as there are a multitude of possibilities.

    Mining with Windows operating system

To start mining on NanoPool you will first need to download a mining program. In this example I would explain how to miner the ethereum, so download the mining program related to the ethereum at this address and called Claymore's dual ethereum.

Once the program is recovered unzip it into a folder.

By decomusing the downloaded file you should get this in the folder

To start the mining you will need to first modify one of the bat files provided with the software.

In our case we will only mine the ethereum so use the Windows note block in order to modify the file start_only_eth.bat.

And change the following line by inserting your ethereum address:

    EthDcrMiner64. exe-epool eth-eu1.nanopool.org:9999-ewal < your_ethereum_address >-epsw x-mode 1-ftime 10

    Save and close the file.

By double clicking on the start_only_eth.bat file, you will then be able to start your mining session on NanoPool and start mining the ethereum.

    minage ethereum avec claymore

By starting the Claymore software you will be able to mine the ethereum and see the level of hashrate you have displayed and scroll in real time

The displayed power (expressed in MH/S) will obviously depend on the graphics card models you own, so do not hesitate to consult again the buying guide if necessary in order to know the best graphic cards adapted to the mining of Crypto-currencies.

Once the mining session is started you can also view your performance statistics on the Nanopool website using the following URL in your address bar:

    https://eth.nanopool.org/account/<Adresse your Myetherwallet wallet >

You will have to wait a few minutes before you see the first hash submitted by the graphic cards of your mining rig as well as an update of the balance in ethereum of your account.

    statistiques nanopool

On this screen you will see the total power (in MH/s) generated by your mining rig as well as your balance in ethereum

Once you have reached the payment threshold which is 0.2 ETH, you will be automatically and promptly credited to the address of your ethereum wallet created previously on myetherwallet.

You can also monitor the status of your mining rig in real time on your smartphone Android en Download the following application available on the Android market.

L’application Nanopool mining monitor (available on Google store) will allow you to view the performance of your mining rig in terms of hashrate (MH/s)

You can also get a rough estimate of your dollar winnings.

Now that you are able to mine cryptocurrencies and after getting your first ethereum, maybe you will want to sell them in order to earn money (in euros). So we'll see how to sell his ethereum and therefore exchange them for euros.

    Sell or Exchange cryptocurrencies

In addition to your new activity as a minor, you will also have to play a role as a trader.

Indeed once you have crypto-currency you will have two choices that will offer to you:

    • Exchange its cryptocurrencies against conventional currencies (dollar, euro, Swiss franc,...)
    • Keep your crypto-currencies and wait for the right time to sell
    • To sell your crypto-currencies I advise you this article that will explain the sale of crypto-currencies on the Platform anycoindirect. On the other hand if you want to exchange a crypto-currency against another crypto-currency use the online service Changelly which is more than practical and very intuitive to use.

      Conclusion

At this point you now know how to mount a rig and configure it correctly in order to mine cryptocurrencies in good conditions.

You are also able to sell your crypto-currencies for euros or to exchange them between them.

In the next article we'll see how to calculate the electricity costs as well as the profitability of its mining rig which will be very useful for you to establish your investment plan and financially manage your mining activity on the day day.
